M&T Bank Celebrates Grand Opening of New Armory Square Branch
Company Makes $20,000 Donation to Support Downtown Syracuse Foundation, Launches ‘Support Local Sweepstakes’

SYRACUSE, N.Y.; Nov. 6, 2020—M&T Bank, the region’s leading small business lender, is pleased to announce the grand opening of its new Armory Square Branch at 250 S. Clinton St., Syracuse in the historic Armory Square District. The branch is part of M&T’s new Central New York banking headquarters, which is slated to be complete early next year.

In celebration of the grand opening, M&T awarded $20,000 in grant funding to the Downtown Syracuse Foundation to advance their work to uplift the community and build a more vibrant, inclusive city. The company will also launch a “Support Local Sweepstakes” with a chance to win gift baskets and gift cards to local businesses to create an impactful way to celebrate the opening of the new branch and provide an extra boost to local businesses as they continue to navigate the challenges of the pandemic.

“In this time of crisis, we must all work together to support our communities, colleagues and clients as they face the challenges of the pandemic,” said Allen Naples, President of M&T’s Central New York Region. “When we started discussing the grand opening of our branch, we knew we wanted to uphold our proud 165-year tradition of supporting businesses in need and so many worthwhile organizations in the communities where we live and work. As a community, we are resilient, and I know we will get through this.”

The new 2,800 square-foot branch, located less than one mile from its former location at 101 S. Salina St., features a modern design and the same welcoming staff, including an onsite expert in small business and SBA lending. There is also a 24-hour ATM vestibule available to customers.

Beginning Nov. 16, 2020, customers who visit the Armory Square Branch, or make an appointment to connect with the branch staff over the phone or in person, will be entered into our “Support Local Sweepstakes” with a chance to win gift baskets and gift cards to local businesses. The complete terms and conditions will be announced on the company’s social media pages in the coming days.

M&T offers a variety of contactless banking options in addition to in-branch services. Customers can access their accounts and complete banking transactions through M&T’s online and mobile banking capabilities and network of ATMs, all of which provide check withdrawal and deposit services. M&T continues to invest in technology innovations to improve the customer experience and provide additional choice and convenience.

“We are very excited to open the doors to our new Armory Square Branch and invite you to visit and meet our associates, either virtually or in-person with strict safety measures in place,” said Heather Reed, Manager of M&T’s Armory Square Branch. “Our team is committed to delivering a differentiated banking experience and developing relationships that last a lifetime.”

M&T invested approximately $7 million to renovate its new regional headquarters and branch, as well as upgrade them with the latest in technology, furniture and equipment. More than 140 financial professionals, including experts in retail and commercial banking, wealth management and insurance, will have offices on the building’s 4th floor once construction is complete.

“This new state-of-the-art branch and office space represents a major investment in the City of Syracuse and Armory Square,” said Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh. “It also demonstrates M&T’s confidence in downtown Syracuse and in the economic growth of this region now and into the future.”

M&T sold its property at 101 South Salina St. to Douglas Development Corp., a Washington, DC based real estate developer noted for bringing new life to iconic buildings. Douglas Development plans to create a mix of apartments and ground floor retail, with the specifics to be worked out once M&T has vacated the space.

Over the last 25 years, M&T has invested more than $30 million to support thousands of charitable organizations in the region, and just this past year, its employees reported volunteering 9,000 hours at 150 local organizations.

Beyond its charitable giving, M&T has played an active role in the region’s economic response to the pandemic. As the top U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) lender in Syracuse, it leveraged its expertise and mobilized its local banking teams to help customers access critical funding through the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP). M&T successfully helped 1,995 businesses in the Syracuse/Utica area access $416MM in PPP funding. M&T also contributed to the New York Forward Loan Fund, an initiative aimed at providing financial support to small businesses and nonprofits as they reopen and recover.

The bank has 45 offices and employs nearly 450 people in its Central New York region, which includes Onondaga, Cayuga, Oswego, Madison, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida and Seneca Counties.
