M&T Bank Announces Remodel of Corporate Headquarters Banking Hall

BUFFALO, N.Y.; March 28, 2019—M&T Bank today announced it has commenced a project to transform the ground-floor banking hall at One M&T Plaza, the company’s corporate headquarters in downtown Buffalo, N.Y.

Located on Main Street in the Central Business District, One M&T Plaza was designed by internationally renowned architect Minoru Yamasaki and completed in 1966. The banking hall, as it was known by Yamasaki, is a 35 foot high banking room at the ground floor of the 21-story building. The space boasts the company’s flagship branch, known as the One M&T Plaza Branch, as well as several office arrangements occupied by mortgage loan officers, commercial and personal banking professionals.

“With the renovation of our banking hall, we are ensuring that we provide our customers and team members a highly efficient and modern environment – all while being respectful of the original mid-century modern design,” said Richard Gold, president and chief operating officer of the company.

The entire space will receive new flooring, LED lighting, paint, technology and furniture. The branch will be relocated to the other side of the floor and modernized with a new teller line, staff offices and customer seating area, while plans for the other half of the floor are still under development.

“We aspire to be good stewards of the Yamasaki design, along with our other architectural treasures, including the M&T Center building at Main and Genesee Streets that was designed by E. B. Green,” Gold added.  “We sought to elaborate on some of Yamasaki’s themes through the design of our newer branch offices, such as our Southgate Plaza branch in West Seneca, and plan to give the same care and attention to the renovation of the banking hall at One M&T Plaza.”

The branch and ATM vestibule will remain open throughout the renovation period, giving customers uninterrupted access to M&T’s full suite of services.

M&T Bank is one of Western New York’s top private-sector employers, with nearly 7,000 employees in the region, including nearly 1,200 working out of its corporate headquarters.
